Happy New Year to everyone.  I hope that 2013 will be a good, happy and healthy year for everyone.  Although a very special time of year for our Greek neighbours our village was quiet as most families spend the time together in their homes eating, drinking, talking and exchanging gifts.  New year is when the Greek version of Santa Claus, Saint Basil arrives bearing gifts on a boat.  Thus a popular symbol for this festive season is a boat rather than a Christmas tree.  We celebrated New Year’s day with a special meal.

001The table was decorated with red and white this time and our meal began with a special version of a “Waldorf salad” a bit different from the “Fawlty Towers” recipe!  This was served with a dry sherry.

004Our main course comprised Boiled Ham with honey mustard sauce, Cauliflower cheese, baked beans mixed with bacon, green peas and boiled potatoes tossed in butter and parsley.  We had a bottle of a chilled Greek Rose wine to accompany the food.  Bring on the “leftovers”!  Don’t you just love leftovers?……..All of the flavour and none of the work!

It’s a good job that one of my New Year’s resolutions is to resume walking everyday…Got to lose some of that weight after all the good meals eaten over the holiday season!
