This year the table was laid with Red and White, just waiting for the traditional English Christmas Dinner.
While preparing the Christmas feast (still in my pyjamas) I was very surprised to hear a commotion in our courtyard, outside the kitchen. Looking out I was greeted by a large group comprising my village neighbours, singing Christmas carols, accompanied by guitar, lyra (a traditional Cretan instrument) and triangles (no carol singers would be without one.) Leading the party was our village mayor bearing a gift of Christmas candies. What a lovely surprise on Christmas morning…I’ll just have to remember to get dressed earlier in the day next year!
By the way the Mayor is the jolly lady on the left, the gentleman on the right is the owner of our favourite taverna in the village.
