As promised, here is the post about our scary experience which ended with a very good experience.
On the first day of our holiday at Easter, we went for an evening meal at a taverna in the nearest village of Makrigialis. We had been told that we would be able to take a taxi back to our resort which is located in the hills outside the village. When we finished our meal we asked the waiter to ring for a taxi. There were no taxis available so we waited and had a glass of wine. About half an hour later there was still no sign of a taxi and by this time it was dark. Very kindly one of the customers offered to drive us to our resort (for the price of a glass of Raki….said with a wink). We wound our way up into the hills and were dropped off in the dark, assured that we were in the right place. We could not see our hotel but saw a sign pointing to an artist’s studio which we had been told earlier was close to our hotel. The first house we could see had a very large and loud dog barking in the courtyard, so we stood on the road and yelled for some help but nobody came. Hoping that the dog was tied up we continued up the road hoping to find another house. The road got steeper and steeper and we got more and more worried and I can honestly say that I really thought we would have to sleep on the side of the road until it got light in the morning and we could see what we were doing. Then a bit further on we saw a light and a courtyard with no big barking dog. As we walked towards the front door it was opened by a gentleman with a big friendly face and we were warmly welcomed into a smiling Greek family. We explained how lost we were and after feeding us Greek Easter cookies the grandfather and the grandson (who spoke some English) drove us to the parking lot at our hotel. After making sure that we were in the right place the grandfather insisted that we join him and their family for their traditional Easter feast on Sunday. A lovely way to end such a scary ordeal. The photos that follow show the hilly country side where we were lost and then the wonderful feast that we shared with our new Greek friend on Sunday.
